- In order to narrow your search to your desired
occupation, you should choose one of the occupations listed in the pop-up box
or enter the governments 4-digit number to identify jobs by occupation.
- It's safest to choose from the occupation codes scrolling window rather
than type in a job series. Then you don't need to worry about typos. Remember,
typos in your search choices can dramatically impact the results of your search!
When scrolling through the list of job types, you may find that you are
interested in several job types that begin with the same numbers (for instance,
0511 - Auditing, 0525 - Accounting Technician, 0560 - Budget Analysis).
In this case, you may want to try the Intermediate search which allows you to
enter up to six occupational series.
- Or, you can select an OCCUPATIONAL GROUP
(such as 0500 - Accounting & Budget) to search for all available jobs
in that group rather than searching separately.
- To clear an entry from the scrolling job type window, choose the top
item in the scrolling list, or click on the clear button near the bottom
of the page.
- NOTE: If you want to view all jobs in a
particular state or a particular pay level, please leave the occupation blank.

- Select a state, region or country from the scroll box. If
you wish to search by more than one location or region, you can do this in the
intermediate search.
- If you wish
to narrow your search to a certain region of the country or perhaps just
see Overseas jobs, choose the desired location from the scrolling Region/State
field.
- NOTE: If you leave these fields blank, you will see ALL jobs nationwide and
overseas.
|
- Enter up to three 2-character state codes (i.e., Virginia = VA) if you want to
narrow your search to just a single state.
- Regions of the country are identified by special codes. If you wish
to narrow your search to a certain region of the country or perhaps just
see Overseas jobs, choose the desired location from the scrolling Region/State
field. On subsequent searches you will be familiar with this code and may
simply enter it into the region or state location code box if desired.
- You can also search by select countries. For
example, the code GE stands for Germany.
- NOTE: If you leave these fields blank, you will see ALL jobs nationwide and
overseas.

Keyword
Search
|
 |
The keyword search will search all of the full
vacancy announcements in our database. A boolean search will search each job
announcement for the word or words that you enter. This is best
used if you are looking for words that may or may not be
together.
For example, if you
were to enter Information Technology Specialist (without the quotes), it will search until it finds the first occurrence
of Information, then continue to search for the first occurrence of Technology
and finish the search when it finds Specialist. The
results may show announcements that have the words together or
separate.
If you want to search by a phrase, you MUST
type your phrase between double quotes: "Information Technology
Specialist"
To search for a phrase, use double quotes:
example: "Information Technology Specialist"
For Boolean searches, you can use AND, OR, and NOT
example: chemist OR biologist NOT navy
For complex searches, use parenthesis:
example: chemist OR (biologist NOT navy) Note:
Complex searches could result in no job
matches. Be careful not to misspell words or abbreviations. The
keyword search is not intended to be used for searching by occupational
series, state or agency, you should use the appropriate search fields as
indicated on the search screen. If your search results in no job
matches, be sure you are using the appropriate boolean operators shown
below.
| Boolean Operators |
Examples |
Result |
|
AND
& |
banking
AND services
banking &
services
banking development |
Using these
operators will return only the results with both the words banking
AND services in the job announcement.
Note:
If you don't separate
your search words, AND is implied by
default. |
|
OR
|
, |
banking
OR services
banking | services
banking,
services |
Using any of
these operators will return results that contain either banking OR
services in the
job announcement. |
|
AND
NOT |
banking
AND NOT services |
Using AND
NOT will return those results that contain the word banking
but will
exclude those that contain the word services. |
| ( )
Utilize parentheses to separate keyword subsets |
(banking OR services) AND NOT teller |
Using the parentheses to separate keyword subsets will result in a more
refined search. You can use any of the Boolean Operators to separate your search
criteria.
|
|
" "
Utilize quotation marks to identify
phrases |
"banking
services" |
Use phrases in Search when you
want specific words or numbers to appear together in your results. If you want
to find an exact phrase, use "quotation marks"
around the phrase when you enter words in the search box.
|
| *
Utilize an asterisk as a wildcard character |
bank* |
Using * after a root word will bring back any results that contain
a variation of that root word in the title or description. In this example, the
search would return any results that contain the words bank, banking,
banker, etc. |
Note: Do not use other operators
or punctuation marks in your query. Periods (.) are ignored,
while semi-colons (;) and colons (:) could
block your search from being executed at all.
If you enter A B C D as a query, we will search
for A AND B AND C AND D as opposed to the phrase "A B C D" (words next to each
other). You can still search for phrases by surrounding the terms in
double-quotes, for example, "chief technology officer" or "technical
writer."
